What's Thanksgiving about then?

It was very quiet out in the blogosphere yesterday. Hardly anyone popped round for a visit, and even fewer people left comments. Blimey, I thought to myself, I must have said something to offend all my bloggy chums, or maybe the post I did on tattoos scared everyone off because they thought I was a bit weirdy.

But then I realised that it was Thanksgiving in America (a lot of my visitors are from across the pond), and for some odd reason most of them had chosen to spend the day with their family rather than visiting my lil' ol' blog in the UK. Yep, I agree.... totally unfathomable.

Anyway, it got me wondering: (1) What is Thanksgiving all about?; and (2) why don't we have it in the UK goddamit? Extra holidays never go amiss.

So I did a bit of research, but to be honest, I got bored quite quickly reading about old shit. In my brief foray, I did however glean that Thanksgiving has got something to do with some pilgrims who sailed from the UK to America. Then they claimed that they had "discovered" the continent even though they were greeted by indigenous Indian Americans.

As to why we don't have a Thanksgiving celebration in the UK, the answer is easy. As a nation, we far prefer grumbling about everything rather than celebrating.

That's me done for today. Izzy and I are off to visit a chum in Bristol tomorrow and I have to pack some gear.

But. Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends. Please drop by and let me know how you celebrated!

  1. You don't get to celebrate Thanksgiving because you have Royal Weddings to give you impromptu national holidays...we don't get that! =-p *snicker*

I celebrated by cooking my ass off for the husband him and the husband him's dad. Made deviled eggs that I only got 3 of because the ass wad (aka the husband him) ate what was left of them while I was sleeping last night.

Then on top of it woke up sick...lucky fucking me! Blech! =)

Doesn't answer the whole what's Thanksgiving about thing....but I'm sure someone smarter than me can explain it better than I can! =) Besides...I'm sick! =)

  2. our Thanksgiving was in October (canada here). but i did notice a lot of quietness around these parts. i was working until late, and was in a bit of a pissy mood last night so didn't get around like i try to. tonight is a little better. it is friday after all and i don't work again until monday. yay me. it snowed here today again, so after i was done work, i had to go out and shovel the driveway so that k can get out for groceries in the morning (and i don't have to get up and stupid oclock am).
    have a great w/end~

  3. I want to know why we can't have our own version of Thanksgiving, hmph. Just not sure what it would be called. Moaning Minnies Day? You're right, we do moan a lot ... present company excepted of course. ;-)
Belated Happy Thanksgiving, Jewell. Hope you feel better soon chuck.

  4. Thanksgiving really is a way for turkey farmers to reduce the turkey surplus population...thereby keeping the price stable. It is also a way of inducing tryptophan comas from said turkey and subject consumers to subliminal advertising during the traditional Thanksgiving day football games so they will go out and spend lots of money on Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving).

    I think that covers it?!

  5. I don't think i could cope with another holiday so close to christmas, and particularly one that involved families and turkey! I think we should just have a few more bank holidays, as everyone loves a three day weekend!

  10. Being Canadian Anne, we celebrate Thanksgiving in October....we have to do something different from the US! We usually eat our way through Thanksgiving! And it is a day off from the regular routine.

  11. As Jim pointed out, was not Thanksgiving here in Canada; ours is in October, and is pretty much a day off and excessive beyond gluttony eating. Or as we call it a Monday....

  12. Sorry I haven't been around to respond to your comments this weekend... Bad Annie.

Wow, I really didn't know that Canada had a different date. Mind you, the US peeps don't seem to have a definitive reason for celebrating it. Is it different in Canada?
