It was manslaughter M'Lud

Oh no! disaster has struck in deepest, darkest, rural Oxfordshire. And I don't mean a little, piddly disaster like the BP oil spill, I mean a proper stomach-churning, gut wrenching disaster. A disaster that made me want to shout, "EVERYBODY PANIC!" and run around in random directions.

"What the bloody hell has happened?" I hear you cry.

Well it's like this. My.... ahem... friend .....errrm Janice, accidentally dropped her iPhone down the toilet today. Yep, the toilet. Oh no! Oh yes! The circumstances were as follows: There was a small splash (apparently) and then it was spotted lying there, half-submerged in water, with a madly blinking screen.

The iPhone was quickly retrieved much to the disgust of the hand that was delegated the task, and phone revival started in the form of vigorous shaking to get rid of the excess water. Nothing worked.

Pic.No.1. It's like a Greek Tragedy - the iPhone lies prostrate and unmoving

Alas, my my friend's iPhone remained steadfastly dead. No emails, no texts, no phonecalls, no music...... I am gutted.

So my question is: Can anything be done to try bring iPhone back to life?

You need... sorry, your friend needs to open it up, if possible and remove the battery. Then stick it all in the airing cupboard for a couple of days until you/they are sure that it is completely dry. Put the battery back in and cross fingers. It may... just MAY, come back to life.
But it also may not.

Cheers Masher... will try that. Just got to work out where the bloody battery is and how I can take it out. I've found two tiny screws.... ummmmm...

Annie - ZOIKS!
I'm thinking a defibrillator may cause more problems than it solves. CPR may only damage the screen. Mouth to mouth resuscitation...well, an IPhone doesn't have a mouth...so that's out. Is there a patron Saint for electronic devices you could have a word with? Saints Jobs perhaps...just asking. I agree with masher about drying it out, and the standard first practice of [males] trying to fix things is to blow on it as well. Good luck!

Be well - Ron

Nah, don't bother. The iPhones have a moisture sensor tucked away inside them. It's a little visual identifier that turns colour when the iPhone has been in contact with 'excessive' moisture. If it was still under warranty when this occurred, you could take it to an Apple store, they'd open it up, take a look and as soon as they saw the moisture detector had changed colour they'd refuse to replace it.

I think you should look out your insurance details!!

Even if it comes back to life it will only be for a short time as chemicals in the water will damage the internal circuitry.

Please accept my good wishes for an uneventful recovery. My regards to the patient.

Clean water won't damage anything, but, as Robert says, any chemicals that were in the water - including wee wee - won't have done it any good.

But dry it out anyway... you have nothing to lose.

Phil Moore: If you dont turn it on it may dry out and work. If it was on or you have tried to turn it on wet then yiou will have fried the mother board and its now a door stop.

Ian Stackhouse: Are you sure this wasn't staged so you can justify getting the new iPhone 4 on the 21st of this month? ;-)

Dave Askew: 4 Possible solutions: Let it dry out, if no success you could try booking an appointment with the apple store. They normal repair them for £140, unsure if they do with water damaged phones but no harm trying. If that doesn't work drop it in a bowl of meths, leave for 24 hours and then let dry out for another day. The alcohol cleans it and then evaporates, can also fix broken PCB's sometimes. Lastly if none of that works, you've got yourself a very expensive door stop! Good luck :)

LOL Ian - Funny you should say that - I was reading the reviews of the new iPhone yesterday.... but no, it was truly an unfortunate accident

Phil - the annoying thing was, that the first thing I tried to do was power off. But the iPhone has this feature that comes up on the screen 'slide here to power off'. Of course the screen wasn't working so I couldn't do it.

Cool Dave - what do I try first - the meths or the Apple store? The meths thing sounds scary.

Ok, thanks for all your advice. From what you have said, I am now following this course of action: iPhone is currently outside in the sun drying out. Not sure how long to leave it? But then I am going to try turning it on.

If that doesn't work, I will take it to the Apple shop and 'fess up to dropping it down the toilet, in the hope they can repair it.

If that doesn't work, I am going to put it in Meths for 24 hours.

If that doesn't work, I will look at insurance replacement.

Phil Moore: household insurance or just try swapping it with Andy's when he isnt looking

You, electronics and water (wine) don't really go together do they?
